PLAYER PROFILE

Gunnar Henderson’s rise helped define a new Orioles era. Sustaining that impact will depend on complete offensive production and the adjustments that hold up over time.

From Alabama to Baltimore

Baltimore selected Gunnar Henderson 42nd overall in the 2019 draft, investing in an Alabama high school infielder with the athleticism to play shortstop. His path captures several stages of the Orioles’ recent history: finding young talent, developing it and learning how to sustain success.

The canceled 2020 minor league season disrupted that development. By 2022, Henderson had advanced through the upper minors and reached Baltimore, giving the club another player with the potential to become a long-term cornerstone.

The breakthrough established the ceiling

Henderson won American League Rookie of the Year honors in 2023. An All-Star season followed in 2024, demonstrating the offensive impact Baltimore could receive from a position that also carries substantial defensive responsibility.

Those achievements matter because they came against major league competition. They provide evidence of his ability, rather than a projection built entirely on prospect reputation. They also create expectations that can make every quiet series feel larger than it is.

Look beyond the home-run total

A productive offensive season depends on more than power. Reaching base, driving extra-base hits and maintaining improvement after opponents adjust all contribute to a hitter’s value.

The useful question is whether Henderson can bring those pieces together consistently. His strongest season offers a reason for optimism. It cannot guarantee that the next season will reproduce the same results without further adjustment.

Build on the player who already succeeded

Baltimore should respect what made Henderson dangerous while identifying a clear priority for improvement. More instructions do not automatically create a better hitter; a plan has to be understandable and workable in the batter’s box.

For fans, sustained production is a better measure than treating every at-bat as a verdict on his future. The next chapter is about adaptation: whether Henderson and the Orioles can turn a substantial body of major league experience into another strong run of complete offensive performance.
